Yes! We have numerous testimonies on our website and can get you in contact with a past retreat guest. Please reach out to us and we’ll be happy to connect you.
Grief doesn’t discriminate. It is important to the KAREfarm team that anyone and everyone touched by grief has the opportunity to process and find a little bit of healing in nature. We are so lucky to be a part of such a generous community that helps us provide a free retreat to all our guests.
Yes. We have golf carts and four wheelers to accommodate all levels of accessibility.
Guests will have the option to sleep in a private space, sleep in a space with a support person, or sleep in a space with another guest of the same gender. The KAREfarm team will ask the guest’s preferences before confirming the sleeping arrangements for the retreat.
No. We welcome all faiths, beliefs, and creeds.
We welcome all faiths, beliefs, and creeds. We will have optional activities that will appeal to different worldviews that retreat guests will have the chance to opt in or opt out.
The weekend will consist of multiple activities including activities to share your story, alone time to process, hiking, yoga, spiritual activities, meditations, and campfires (including smores!). All activities are optional, and retreat guests are welcome to participate as little or as much as they want.
Friday night is an optional night for retreat participants to get to know each other and enjoy a campfire. Saturday will start with everyone sharing their grief journey. The rest of the day will have different activities including meditation, downtime, shared meals, and time in nature. Saturday will end with an activity to honor our lost loved ones and another campfire. On Sunday, we will talk about coping mechanisms and tangible actions stepping back into the “real world”. Here is an example agenda from a prior retreat:

Currently KAREfarm gears its retreats to adults 21 and older. Please contact us if you need information about resources for children under 21.
Just like all retreat guests, the support person is encouraged to participate in all activities they are comfortable with. Sometimes the Support People learn from and find comfort in other ‘support people’.
Yes! We encourage you to bring a ‘support person.’ A support person is someone that has either experienced the grief with you or has walked alongside you in your grief journey.
Food, sleeping arrangement, water, bathrooms, and smores supplies are provided for everyone! Please let us know if you need help with other supplies.
We have multiple porta potties and a cabin bathroom for guests.
KAREfarm provides meals (and smores supplies), clean bathrooms, private sleeping areas, and transportation to different retreat areas if needed. There will not be air conditioning and we can’t get rid of all the bugs nature provides! Please reach out to the KAREfarm team if you are concerned about the ‘comforts’ of a retreat and how we can accommodate you.
We will do our best to accommodate any dietary limitations. Please let your KAREfarm contact know your specific limitations so that the team can plan for it.
This is a possibility but not typical. We will always ask your permission to share accommodations before the retreat.
Yes, please let the KAREfarm contact know your sleep preferences and we will do our best accommodate.
There are different sleeping options: a cabin, a glamp tent, or in our main building. The KAREfarm team will ask the guest’s preferences before confirming the sleeping arrangements for the retreat.
This is a completely normal response. We have added a zoom call 2-3 weeks before your confirmed retreat date to answer any questions you might have and also introduce you to the other guests at that retreat. We also urge you to reach out to your KAREfarm contact to discuss your concerns and fears to make sure that you can make the best choice for you.
Please let the KAREfarm team know as soon as possible if you can no longer attend a retreat. Though we are offering retreats free of charge to our guests, is a cost associated with each retreat, and we would like to have enough time to allow us to reach out to guests on the waitlist to join the retreat and we can plan accurately.

Individual Camping Gear
Every camper needs these things.
—Clothing- You want to stay dry and warm, so dress in layers. Bring extra wool socks, a warm jacket for night, and a rain layer. Bring comfortable, closed-toe shoes good for the woods. Water-resistant if possible. Rubber boots or shoes are a big bonus.
—Toiletries- Wet Wipes are great to have along. Toothbrush, toothpaste, razors, makeup and beauty products are all optional. We’ll have port-a-lets and water containers, but no sinks or running water.
– Facilities – There is electricity and running water on the farm, but not located at our glamp areas. We have exceptionally clean portables. At this time (soon to come) we do not have dependable access to showers. (soon to come).
—Headlamp or flashlight—cheap is fine! But we have plenty for you to borrow.
—Water bottle with a clip for walking trails. We’ll have water tanks for refills.
—Earplugs (we have them for you if needed)
WHAT NOT TO BRING
—Limit cell phones- It is important to be present but we all have lives outside of camp- just use sparingly
—Heavy gear or supplies.
Even though it’s comfortable glamorous camping, some CAMPING 101 basics still apply…..
Moisture is the enemy of comfort. Keep that in mind as you make choices. What gets wet, stays wet. Synthetic is better than cotton. Wool is fantastic.
Wear good, water-resistant shoes- the farm can be muddy.
Our accommodations do not have heat or air conditioning (other than that from nature).
Always keep the doors zipped shut unless you are actively accessing the tent. You don’t want to sleep with critters and bugs.
Locate your headlamp and have it with you before dark. Keep it around your neck for easiest access.
Make sure that anything you bring (clothes, gear, etc) is as versatile and multi-functional as possible. It is much better to bring 5 things than 25 things.
Put all trash into a trash bag immediately. Things will blow around and get scattered very quickly.
If you go to bed first, put in your earplugs. Tents do not block sound. The rest of your group
should not be expected to get super quiet since you chose to call it a night.
Yes, we do have a retreat if it rains, unless bad storms with thunder and lightning are expected. We will move any outdoor activities to the pole barn. The glamps and cabins are fine to sleep in in bad weather. If very bad weather is expected your KAREfarm representative will reach out to you with details on how we will be approaching the retreat. As of this time we have not cancelled any retreat due to weather.
Yes, there is safe shelter and a cabin if bad weather hits.
Yes! On a regular basis we inspect the glamps and cabins and their contents to ensure that everything is in working order and poses no risk to our guests. The main areas on the farm where you will be spending time (glamps/cabins, pole barn, lake) are also maintained regularly to ensure safety. The remainder of the farm includes 4-miles of trails, in which some are a bit hilly and accessible on foot or by one of the golf carts or four wheelers. There is also a 2-acre lake that includes paddle-boating and kayaking, and life-preservers are required.
Being in nature (on a 100-acre farm), you will see nature such as deer and turkeys, and hear an occasional barn owl. There are also two tiny, adorable dogs who make KAREfarm their home. Please let us know if that is an issue. There may also be other KAREfarm team member dogs that offer love and gentle support. If you would rather not have a dog near you, please let us know.
Yes, although it may be spotty depending upon your service provider. We do encourage you to limit phone time so that you can get the maximum benefit of disconnecting from ‘everyday life’ and re-connecting to the healing power of nature and your fellow retreatants.

Yes! We would love to have you attend a future retreat if your original date no longer works for you. However, please let the KAREfarm team know as soon as possible if you have to reschedule as we sometimes have waiting lists and would like to fill your spot.
We encourage retreat guests to come Friday evening to get ‘settled in’ and meet other retreat guests and the KAREfarm team. We have seen that this helps guests get comfortable with each other as we roll into the ‘official’ retreat activities on Saturday.
Guests can come for just one day of the retreat. However, we do encourage our guests to stay the entire time if possible to get the full retreat benefit.
We know that life can be crazy. If you need to leave early or come late, just let us know and we will be happy to accommodate your retreat experience.
We will assist with pickup from the Cincinnati airport. If you fly into Louisville, Lexington, or Dayton, please contact us for transportation assistance. Please reach out to a KAREfarm representative to arrange travel to and from the farm for the retreat. At this time, we are not able to assist with airline costs if flying into the area.
Cincinnati, Ohio is the closest major city (50 miles) to the KAREfarm retreat location. Lexington and Louisville, Kentucky and Dayton, Ohio are close.
